Celebrating two years of #everydaystyle with Styling You

Last weekend, Peta and I headed to Brisbane to attend a beautiful lunch hosted by Nikki of Styling You to celebrate two whole years of the #everydaystyle hashtag she created. Yep, hashtags have birthdays, and they know how to party!

Honestly, blogger events and meetups are usually pretty awkward for me. And even more so when it's stylish people like fashion Instagrammers. *insert hand-wringing and excuse-making here* Unless I know someone really well to latch on to, it's typically just me standing in the corner near the food.

When I received the invitation from Nikki, the very first thing I did was text Peta and hit her up. I was all 'Did you get invited? Are you going? Are we going? What are we wearing?' and she was very casual and 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, I dunno'. This is because my bestie is now what I like to call a big deal. She was Nikki's gorgeous model for the last two Styling You shop seasons, and hence had her face plastered all over the Australian style interwebs. I bask in her reflected glory.

Peta just babin' it up on the Styling You shop

Nikki had arranged for the event to be held on the Hilton Pool Deck right in the middle of Brisbane City, and oh my, it was perfect for a bunch of blinged-up ladies enjoying champagne and chit chat on a stinking hot late November day. There were fans and a cool breeze from across the pool, and we were handed a chilled champers the minute we entered. Nikki's sponsor Olympus generously put on the lovely spread of food and drinks, and there was a lot of ooh-ing and aah-ing over the new Olympus selfie camera.

After a nice mingle getting to know the folk that we hadn't previously met and catching up with old friends, we were seated at an enormous table, with placecards featuring our own favourite #everydaystyle Instagram photos, and lovely gifts from Louenhide - my red journal and cream clutch are going to be well-used, I'm sure.

I'll always love sitting down to a meal and finding goodies at my place setting. Always.
Thanks Louenhide. My love for you runs deep.

After a light lunch, Nikki introduced Simone. A former international model (hanging on the catwalk with the likes of Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford no less!), Simone got us all up and giggling, sharing her top tips for posing in outfit photos. I learned a lot, and think I should probably focus a little on having 'softer' hands in photos, instead of my usual Cancerian claws!

I wore a Seed off-shoulder dress, Witchery wedges (old - similar here), Samantha Wills Bohemian Bardot ring, and Adorne necklace (old - similar here)

The fun didn't end there, Nikki and her assistant Alisha had pulled together an amazing table chock-full of lucky door prizes and I won a lovely hair and makeup transformation from a well-known Brisbane makeup artist who comes out to your home, Bruce Rehbein. I was looking forward to using this, but after a little thought, I decided to offer it up in a swap to the other recipients, as I'm just not getting to Brisbane as much as I'd like these days. Fellow Coastie, Bev of Iris May Style had won a sunshiny yellow Louenhide bag-in-a-bag that I was swooning over, and she quite fancied getting her hair and makeup done for her daughter's upcoming law degree graduation, so swapsies worked out perfectly!

The gorgeous yellow/biscuit Sydney Louenhide that now has pride of place in my Louenhide collection.

Nikki's assistant Alisha was there to help out, and we had two other awesome attendees. Helen of Rhubarb snapping posed and candid photos, as well as the oh-so-talented Jakomina who is such a skillful fashion illustrator!

Jakomina's sweet watercolour fashion sketch of me is stunning, I'm definitely framing this baby!

It was great to get the chance to speak to women who I've connected with previously online, and also to meet and follow new people.  Of course, we all took a million pictures with the silver STYLE balloons before heading downstairs to the Hilton Bar to continue our chats. Everyone was so well-dressed, pulling out some #notsoeverydaystyle glamour for the event! (And I'm pleased to see that kaftans as daywear are still a thing. Big fan.)

It was a really fun afternoon and I'm so pleased we both headed down to Brisbane for it! Peta and I made a bit of a weekend of it, staying in the city that evening, heading for dinner at Southbank and then enjoying the morning by the river the next day; so I'll share all those photos in the next blog post - here!

Thank you very much to Nikki and the Styling You team, I'm so pleased to have been a little part of the celebrations of the #everydaystyle hashtag which has been such a hit online. Thanks also to Nikki's sponsors and brand supporters who contributed to the occasions. I've met such awesome-sauce women through #everydaystyle and felt honoured to be invited.

Have you met people in the 'real' world after meeting online through social media such as blogs, Instagram, Facebook, etc? How did it go down? Are you besties now?

*I don't want to single people out, but there were some key kids that I was stoked to see at the #everydaystyle party. @traineemama (duh),  @what_brooke_wore,  @mrs.lauren.roney,  @ilovethatskirt,  @sisterinstyle,  @retailgenie,  @kirstyashestyle in the most amazing Mister Zimi set,  @style_scouting_,  @istyl,  @styleloving2,  @loveface_beauty, and of course @stylingyou (obvs).

Adding to my sunglasses wardrobe - iCare Eyewear sunnies

I have lost count of how many pairs of sunglasses I have owned, then somehow destroyed. Whether they get scratched because I throw them into my jumbo handbag along with keys and pens and bobby pins; or if it's because I fold them into my shirt collar, bend over and then they drop out and hit the ground lens-first... I can't even.

It is with great trepidation that I buy expensive sunnies.

I used to be a bit of a label snob. I was very conscious of what brands I was wearing; but now, a little older, wiser and with a mortgage, my priority is on style over high price. I mean, I am pretty sure I was one of the first under 40's to get passionate about Katies' great versions of more expensive fashions, and I have never shied away from a Target or Kmart clearance sale!

So you can understand why I'm now pretty keen to have stylish, yet not expensive sunglasses. I have one killer pair of unisex Ray-Ban aviators (which I totally stole from my husband and never plan on returning), and the rest of my spec wardrobe - totally a thing - is filled with cute, yet not irreplaceable sunnies.

Let me tell you that over two months after first wear, I can say that in addition to being ontrend styles, my three pairs of iCare Eyewear sunglasses are very durable. They’ve survived my rough handling and have come out unscathed. My metal-framed aviator pair were even accidentally dropped down half a flight of stadium stairs at work and kicked further when I tried to catch them (how am I even that clumsy), yet are still intact and look good. And they are cute.

For those unfamiliar with iCare Eyewear, these are stylish sunglasses for just about everyone, including babies and kids. They come in a range of styles and and are perfect for adventurous folks who have a tendency to destroy sunnies at a rate not conducive to a $299 price tag! With sturdy non-toxic plastic frames and strong lenses, these glasses are solid and come with a cleaning cloth case.

And if you're all practical and stuff, and not just about looks, iCare Eyewear sunglasses also exceed Australian standards for protective eyewear. That's nice to know.

If you want to check them out in person, head to the iCare website where you can find your closest pharmacy which stocks the range.

Honestly, while I'd love a junkload of different fancy and expensive sunnies if they were bought for me with someone else's money, I'm so happy to have a few cheap and cheerful options which really do the job. I mean, I've got a pair in my work bag, a pair in my clutch, a couple stashed in my car, and I'm sunglassed up and set to go!

Are you a perennial sunglass loser/destroyer? Any hot tips for me to be able to make mine last longer?

And stay tuned, I'll be giving away all three styles of iCare sunglasses in the coming weeks!

*iCare sunnies gifted - all opinions and lack of care taken with sunglasses my own.

Flowers... just because. FreshFlowers.com.au review and a giveaway!

This post is sponsored by FreshFlowers.com.au

Update: I've chosen a winner! Melina's children's teacher will receive a lovely surprise delivery at work this week! Thanks for joining in, everyone; it was so lovely to read all those comments about who you'd love to spoil!

When I was contacted by new florist on the block FreshFlowers.com.au about reviewing their fresh new website, my response was immediately YES! 'Free flowers, I'm in!' I am, after all, a girl and as a girl I enjoy receiving flowers. I do have a pretty sweet and thoughtful husband, but honestly, can you ever receive too many flowers?

As I was online though, checking out their bouquets and arrangements, I thought how unexpected and lovely it might be for someone else to receive a flower delivery, and promptly ordered a potted orchid for my friend Brooke of Blonde Ambition.

The ordering process was so simple, the hardest part was choosing what I wanted. I love orchids, and giving a potted plant instead of a bouquet really is the gift that keeps on giving. Brooke's apartment in Brisbane is white with lots of natural sunlight and pops of colour everywhere, so I decided to go for traditional white with a sunshine yellow heart! This lovely little gem only cost $49.95, and with 10% for my first order, the whole thing delivered was $53!

I was given an opportunity to write a sentiment for the card and I received email confirmation when the flowers were shipped and then when they were delivered.

I ordered the orchid mid-afternoon on Wednesday, and they arrived safely in Brisbane before lunch Thursday. Brooke snapped these pictures for me, and I'm thrilled at how happy she was with an unexpected delivery!

Girl can cheese.

I am so happy to recommend FreshFlowers.com.au to anyone; the quality was terrific, and the ordering and delivery were spot on. I also think that their prices are pretty amazing. I know where I’m going to turn the next time I am ordering flowers. Just let me know if you're in the mood to send flowers... I'll give you my address!

Who would you love to send a surprise flower delivery to? I will choose one commenter and send a FreshFlowers.com.au bouquet** to their chosen friend or family member!

*This product was kindly provided. Like everything you'll find on Katy Potaty, my thoughts are all my own. For more info, check out my disclosure policy.

** Not sponsored; I'd just like to buy someone else flowers. Comment before midnight Sunday 15th November 2015 AEDST, and I'll choose a lucky winner! (Australian commenters eligible only.)

Trends to try - Watercolour whimsy

As we head into the beginnings of the Summer party season, I start seeking holiday outfits. Outfits that will work on stinking hot days by the pool, out to lunch with friends, and all the way to sunset cocktails.

Washing straight off the canvas, these bright and breezy watercolour prints are splashing their way into my heart and wardrobe this Summer. And I think they might just be the holiday outfits I need.

The light, airy prints make me happy just looking at them—and they're pretty enough to wear from day to date night. (And the cut of this top and frock make them very forgiving, keeping you looking your best while still leaving space for some holiday indulging.)

Would you wear watercolour print? Or do you find them wishy-washy? {See what I did there? Hehe.}
